Yasmin Ameer from Nockolds Solicitors has secured £19.5 million on a lump sum basis for a young girl who suffered life changing injuries after being hit by a car while playing out in a residential area – the firm’s highest ever settlement in a personal injury case.
The claimant suffered a traumatic brain injury and serious orthopaedic injuries as a result of the accident and will require 24-hour care for the rest of her life. She was an inpatient in hospital for six months and has also undertaken intensive community rehabilitation.
Liability was originally in dispute but was resolved at a Joint Settlement Meeting (JSM) in 2018.
With a trial for assessment of quantum due to take place in October 2021, a final JSM has now resulted in the £19.5 million settlement.
Commenting on the case, Yasmin Ameer, who has specialised in high value, complex personal injury litigation for over 30 years, said:
‘This was a hard-fought case for a young girl whose life has changed forever. The impact on the whole family has been devastating.
‘In reaching this settlement, we know that our client’s future rehabilitation, care and living requirements will now be met. It is a long road ahead, but she can finally look to the future.
‘We were fully prepared to go to trial had this settlement not been forthcoming.’
Added Yasmin:
‘I’d particularly like to thank our counsel team of Bill Braithwaite QC and Chris Allen from Exchange Chambers who provided outstanding advice and representation throughout.’
The young girl’s mother paid tribute to Yasmin, saying:
‘Yasmin has been a huge support to our whole family. In the darkest times she has been there for all of us. She is a brilliant lawyer and an even better person. it was an honour to have met Yasmin and more of an honour for her to take on our case.’
Yasmin Ameer has been awarded the status of Leading Individual in the 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 editions of the Legal 500.
The 2022 edition of the Legal 500 says: ‘Yasmin Ameer – probably the most experienced clinical negligence solicitor in the country. Supremely able. Absolutely committed to her clients, fights hard for them and achieves great results. Cannot recommend her highly enough.’
Other comments in Legal 500 2022 include ‘the very best for head injury litigation’ and ‘an exceptional person and solicitor’. Yasmin is also described as a ‘tower of strength and reason’ by Chambers 2021/22 where she is also ranked in Band 1.
