Amazon has announced that it is starting the process of reducing it’s workforce by 18,000 over the course of the coming weeks, including some jobs in Europe. Affected employees will be advised that their jobs are at risk on 18 January.
Amazon’s Chief Executive Andy Jassy confirmed that the layoffs were as a result of the uncertain economy and additional hiring the company undertook during the pandemic. They have experienced slowing sales since COVID restrictions eased. Amazon employs more than 1.6million people worldwide so that redundancies announced amount for a small percentage of the overall workforce but it still remains a significant number of people and continues the overall direction of travel for many of the worlds largest employers. In the past few months Facebook and Twitter have announced significant cuts in staffing levels.
