£1.97 million Awarded to Support Women’s Reproductive Health and Wellbeing in the Workplace

The government has awarded £1.97 million to organisations across England to support women experiencing reproductive health issues in the workplace.

The Health and Wellbeing Fund aims to support organisations to assist women experiencing health issues – such as fertility problems, miscarriage, menstrual health, gynaecological conditions and menopause – to remain in and return to the workplace.

The funding announcement demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving the health of women, a landmark moment in addressing entrenched inequalities and improving the health and wellbeing of women throughout the workplace.

Despite women making up almost half the workforce today, female health continues to be something of a taboo subject with many workplaces failing to fully reflect the wellbeing needs of women.  Many women still feel uncomfortable talking about health issues with their employer and some managers may also feel uncertain how to broach or discuss these issues, which only exacerbates the problem. 

To create a truly diverse and inclusive workplace that champions all employees,  employers are advised to normalise and encourage open discussions around female health by putting in place clear policies for all female health conditions, providing access to information and educating line managers.

Taking care of female health and wellbeing in the workplace will destigmatise women’s health and the impact on their working lives and reap the rewards of a happier, more engaged and productive workforce.
